Slavic Sessions features Grammy-nominated guitarists Mak Grgic and Mateusz Kowalski, who are internationally acclaimed artists celebrated for their virtuosity, imaginative programming and deeply personal musical voices. Together, they form a compelling duo that explores the richness of Slavic musical traditions, alongside masterworks of the classical guitar repertoire, bringing together expressive intimacy, technical brilliance and adventurous artistry.

Born in Slovenia, Grgic was described by The New York Times as a “gifted guitarist” and by The Washington Post as “a guitarist to keep an eye on.” His expansive career has taken him to stages that include the Musikverein in Vienna, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and concert halls throughout Europe, Asia and North America. A multi-time Grammy nominee, Grgic is recognized for his innovative programming that spans Balkan folk traditions, avant-garde music and the microtonal repertoire as well as for his collaborations with leading contemporary ensembles and artists. Grgic is also a founder of the tech company Notey that turns music practice into video games and musical instruments into game controllers.

Kowalski, hailed by Classical Guitar Magazine as “spectacular,” is regarded as one of the leading guitarists of his generation. Particularly admired for his interpretations of Polish and Slavic repertoire, Kowalski gained international recognition for the first-ever live performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto in F minor arranged for guitar and orchestra. Alongside his concert career, he is also active as an educator and lecturer at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Poland.

Their collaborative project, Slavic Sessions, reflects a shared artistic vision rooted in heritage, storytelling and the expressive possibilities of the guitar duo. Through original arrangements and evocative repertoire drawn from across Central and Eastern Europe, Grgic and Kowalski create performances that are both intimate and electrifying, honoring tradition while pushing the boundaries of the classical guitar concert experience.
